The Panel on Critical Energy Transition Minerals was launched by the UN Secretary-General in April 2024. It was tasked to develop a set of global and common voluntary principles on issues which are key to building trust between governments, communities and industry, and provide guidance and best practices to governments and other stakeholders active in the extractive industries field to ensure a just and equitable management of sustainable, responsible and reliable value chains for terrestrial critical energy transition minerals.
The Panel's report, Resourcing the Energy Transition: Principles to guide critical energy transition minerals toward equity and justice, identifies ways to ground the renewables revolution in justice and equity, so that it spurs sustainable development, respects people, protects the environment, and powers prosperity in resource-rich developing countries. It included seven Guiding Principles applicable to the entire value chain and life cycle of critical energy transition minerals and five Actionable Recommendations to operationalize the principles and address gaps in international minerals governance.
As a next step, the Secretary-General has endorsed the creation of a United Nations Task Force on Critical Energy Transition Minerals (UN Task Force on CETM)to coordinate the United Nations' activities across all principles and actionable recommendations.
The Executive Office of the Secretary-General, UNEP, UNCTAD and UNDP, will launch the UN Task Force on CETM at this event. They will outline the UN's collective vision for the Task Force and how it will support advancing global cooperation on critical energy transition minerals. This includes:
- Announcing the establishment of the UN Task Force on Critical Energy Transition Minerals, its mission, structure and expected outcomes.
- Presenting the UN's vision for advancing global cooperation on Critical Energy Transition Minerals, including sustainable and equitable governance.
